He submerged himself wholeheartedly into his sign business. Working long hours seemed to deter the dancing devils in his head. He survived the elements of competition and built a good business. But the business itself took a toll on his health. Unknown to him, his health was silently deteriorating. Tired and exhausted at times, his everyday chores were a constant pain. He ignored our request to visit a doctor. As a veteran and former POW he had access to all the medical help he needed. Once again he displayed that suffrage stubbornness he harbored for a long time. The pain got worse. Finally, the end came one sunny afternoon as he was rushed to the local hospitai and his final journey into heaven.
I was shocked when I received a call from Shorty one of Joe’s employees and close friend. He tells me that Joe was rushed to the hospital that afternoon. Immedlately I drop what I was doing and go directly to the hospital. There in the hallway was my brother and Joe’s son Charles. My brother tells me they were trying to locate Joe’s sister Nena.
I walk into the room. Joe recognizes me rlght away. Unable to talk because of all the tubes sticking in his mouth and nose he reaches out to hold my hand. I see him once again trying desperately to survive. He knows the end is near. I cradle his hand in mine and say a few meaningless words of encouragement. He shakes his head as if to tell me “l’m sorry I wouldn’t be able to go with you to Paris”. After surviving the most demanding experiences of his life In World War II Joe is reaching the end of his life. I cannot stand it any more. Seeing Joe in his final moments after what he went through in life gets my emotional battery drained. Things don t always go as planned. I walk silently out the door, cross the hallway to the water fountain and cry.
What are our greatest gifts in life? How can we help each other? What are we meant to do here? Joe’s purpose in life was survival. God has a goal for all of us. These are powerful questions that can be difflcult to answer. They sometimes surface during a major crisis such as a spiritual awakening or the death of a loved one. |
